Finnish Spitz Dog Breed Pictures

Finnish Spitz dog is Finland’s national dog. This breed of dog is considered as barking bird dog due to its ability to follow the birds till they are treed and then bark in their direction to assist the hunter in locating them. This breed is given lot of value in Finland. These dogs become part of various competitions in their native land just to prove themselves.

Physical appearance:
These dogs have height of 15.5 to 20 inches. They normally weigh 25 to 40 pounds. This breed has facial features like that of fox making it look like a fox from distance. They have short pointed muzzle, dark eyes and mid-sized erect ears. The tail curls and rests on the dog’s back. They have double coat with soft inner coat and moderately long outer coat. The coats of these dogs are shades of golden red color.    

Grooming and Behavior:
The coat should be brushed 2 to 3 times weekly. During the spring and fall, the coat sheds a lot and needs to be brushed daily.
These dogs tend to wary strangers and thus, early socialization is necessary. They become more close to one person of the family. These dogs are good to children and tolerate their rough play or simply walk away from kids.  They are aggressive towards strange dogs, but good with the family pets.

Exercise and Training:
They need daily exercise. Morning and evening walk along with little play is more than enough for this breed. Proper training at early age can enable these dogs to keep control over their barking habit. However, these dogs can’t stop barking. Training them is challenging as they are little stubborn.

Health and Lifespan:
They aren’t prone to severe health problems, albeit may get injured while playing or running. Finnish Spitz dogs have lifespan of 13 to 15 years.
