English Setter Dog Breed Pictures

Developed 400 years ago in England, English Setter dog is descendent of Spaniel, the Spanish Pointer and various other breeds. These dogs are called setter because of their characteristic of crouching on finding birds, so as to enable the throwing of nets used in catching the birds without these dogs getting tangled in it. The two common types of English Setter include the show dog and the field type also called as Llewellin. Despite this, only one breed is considered as standard.

Physical appearance:
The standard dog type of this breed has height of 24 to 25 inches. They weigh 50 to 70 pounds. The show dogs are generally large in size compared to the standard dogs. They have long and narrow head with dropped ears, beautiful eyes and long furry tail. The coat has feathers on ears, legs, tail and belly, while the rest of the coat is smooth. These dogs usually have white coats with various colors spread over it including orange, lemon, liver and blue.

Grooming and Behavior:
To prevent the coat from matting, the coat needs to be thoroughly brushed at least two times in a week. They can perform and get well trained, if the owner loves hunting, jogging, agility training, etc. These dogs are pretty good with kids, but the puppies can get rowdy sometimes with the children if not supervised properly. Also, they are good with other dogs and even other pets.

Exercise and Training:
They need regular exercise for their healthy body and mind. The exercise should be done within the fenced-in area. These dogs should be given basic obedience training. Also, socializing these dogs make them well behaved dogs.

Health and Lifespan:
They are prone to health problems like deafness, hip and elbow dysplasia, etc. These dogs have lifespan of 11 to 13 years.
