Standard variety of Poodle is the oldest of Poodle breeds. This breed of dogs was popular in Europe, especially in Germany and France. However, there is no evidence of their origin. Earlier, these dogs were used as water retrievers. The trimming of the coat of these dogs was practiced mainly to aid them in swimming.
Physical appearance:
They have height of over 15 inches at the shoulder and most of them reach the 21 to 27 inches of tallness. They weigh 50 to 75 pounds. They have rounded head, dark oval-shaped eyes, moderately long dropped ears and long muzzle. They have docked tail and sturdy body. Their coat is thick and curly. Usually, the coat is of only one color and that color can be white, apricot, cream, black or any other color.
Grooming and Behavior:
Grooming these dogs is really a tough task and thus, it is advisable for the owners to discuss the process of grooming them with some expert breeder. Some of the owners prefer taking this breed to grooming parlor once in a month. In addition to professional grooming, the coat needs to be brushed every second day to prevent it from matting.
This breed of dogs is an intelligent breed. They require owners who can spend time with them and love grooming them. These dogs are gentle with kids and other pets as well.
Exercise and Training:
They need vigorous exercise, which may include running, long walks, agility course, flyball game, etc. They need training of basic obedience and early socialization as they wary of strangers. They perform very well in their training.

Standard Poodle is more likely to get affected by health problems like epilepsy, eye problems, thyroid disease, etc. On an average, these dogs have lifespan of 12 to 14 years.
