The Leonberger dog is believed to have been bred from Landseer Newfoundland and Saint Bernards, according to most of the historians. This breed of dogs is said to have been developed in Germany. These dogs were primarily developed as companion dogs, while the other German dogs were developed to work.

Physical appearance:
These dogs have height between 25.5 and 31.5 inches. They weigh hardly 100 to 135 pounds. These dogs are strong and proportionately built. They have large head, which is longer than it is wide. They have black muzzle, brown rounded eyes and dropped ears. Their tail is long, but curly. These dogs are covered with double coat. Their outer coat is usually moderately long. The coat is normally of gold, brown, red or reddish-brown color either with or without black tips.

Grooming and Behavior:
They need appropriate grooming that includes at least three times brushing every week with soft bristle brush. Also, they shed a lot during the shedding season and must be brushed daily in that case.
If these dogs are left alone for longer period of time, then the Leos can become destructive and restless. They are very smart and playful.
They are affectionate and love the owners who spend time with them. They are good with kids and pets as well.

These dogs are very active and love being accompanied for walks or any other activity. They need regular exercise and some activity that can keep them involved and busy. They have great abilities of search-and-rescue and water rescue dogs. Also, they perform well as therapy dogs.  The puppies can be given interactive toys to keep themselves busy, even if they are alone.
This breed needs firm, but fun training. The Leos tend to wary strangers and thus, early socialization is necessary.
