Saluki dog is believed to be one of the oldest dog breeds. This is because during an excavation of Sumerian Empire (approximately 7000 B.C), carvings of dogs appearing much like today’s Salukis was found. These dogs can be broadly classified into two types – smooth coat Salukis and feathered coat Salukis. Having suppleness, these dogs are sighthounds with excellent ability to hunt.
Physical appearance:
These dogs are strongly built to run with astounding speed and hunt game. The female Salukis are smaller than the males. The height of this breed is 23 to 28 inches and it weighs between 40 and 60 pounds. Their face profile is long and narrow featuring big rounded eyes and long, dropping ears. This breed also has long and curvy tail.
Feathered coat Salukis have silky hair on their ears, legs, thighs and even on tails. The rest of the body of the feathered coat Salukis features no feathers, but soft and smooth coat. In case of smooth coat Salukis, they have only smooth and soft coat without any feathering. These dogs may have coat colors including white, red, gold, cream, black and tan.
Grooming and Behavior:
These dogs need weekly brushing and two times combing of the feathers. This breed is very affectionate, albeit it may not obey all the commands of its owner. These dogs have been hunting dogs over the past thousands of years and thus, obeying orders is not a cup of their tea.
They make great pets at home. However, proper supervision is necessary of their interaction with smaller pets.
Exercise and Training:
They love chasing and running. They look very attractive while running as they run very gracefully. They need regular exercise. In case of lack of exercise, this breed may become destructive.
Training them is indeed a challenging task. The training should be more fun and not repetitive task. The owner should remember that these dogs won’t be as obedient as other breeds.
Health and Lifespan:
Saluki dogs may become victim to various diseases like anesthesia, thyroid, heart disorders, etc. They can live up to 15 years.
