Schnauzer Dog Breed Pictures


Oldest of Schnauzer breeds, Standard Schnauzer dog is a multipurpose dog breed capable of catching vermin, protecting farm and livestock, etc. They were also used for protecting the family. The painting of dogs similar to Standard Schnauzer dogs from the Middle Ages have been found indicating that the breed existed even in that age.

Physical appearance:
These dogs have height between 17 and 20 inches and weigh between 35 and 45 pounds. They have blocky head with rectangular shape. Their face is cute with oval, dark brown eyes and naturally dropped or cropped ears. The height of the dog is same as the length. The dogs have sturdy and well balanced body. They have double coat with soft, dense inner coat and rough, wiry outer coat. The colors acceptable are black and salt, and pepper.

Grooming and Behavior:
The coat should be brushed two times weekly to prevent it from matting and tangling. The inner coat needs more brushing as it sheds a lot. It is advisable to discuss the caring of the coat with the breeder.
They are intelligent, but stubborn in nature. They love to be part of regular family life. They are watchful and usually wary strange people. These dogs are king and good with kids and other dogs on being socialized well. However, they can’t be trusted with small pets.  

Exercise and Training:
These dogs have high energy and love daily work as well as playing. The games they enjoy the most are agility course, fly-ball and even jogging. They like to accompany the owners and do what their owners do.
They need to be trained early to keep them busy and under control.

Health and Lifespan:
Standard Schnauzer dog may suffer from health problem like hip dysplasia. These dogs can live between 12 and 14 years.
