During 18th century, the Collie dog was used for herding and guarding sheep in Scotland. This is a beautiful breed of dogs gained popularity in the late 18th century, after the publication of stories by Alfred Payson Terhune about his Collies.
Physical appearance:
These dogs can be easily recognized due to their distinctive wedge shaped face. They have height between 22 and 26 inches. These dogs weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. The male Collies are bigger than the females. They have rough double coat with lush mane, feathers and curl tail. Some of the Collies have short and smooth double coat without feathers. The color of these dogs’ coat includes sable, white, blue merle, tricolored, etc.
Grooming and Behavior:
The dogs with smooth need brushing two times in a week, while the rough coat require more brushing as compared to smooth brushing. During spring and fall, both the Collies shed a lot. Therefore, it becomes necessary to brush them daily.
They can become great family companions, if give proper house-training. They are loyal breed with gentle behavior with kids. Also, they are watchful of the owner’s property and house. Few dogs of this breed barks a lot, but they can be trained to keep control over their barking habit.
Exercise and Training:
They need vigorous exercise including couple of walks in a day along with game of catch in between of walks.
The Collies need proper training of basic obedience and even of how to participate in dog sports. Also, they must be given advance training. It is also advisable for the owners of the dog to be part of these trainings.

These dogs are sensitive to health issues like eye disorders, gastric bloat, torsion, etc. They normally have lifespan of 10 to 12 years
