Originated in China, Chow Chow dog is considered as 2000 years old breed. In China, they are also referred as Lang Gou (wolf dog) or Xiong Gou (bear dog). There is contradiction between the groups of experts over the ancestors of this breed. Some believe that these dogs are descendents of Tibetan Mastiff and Samoyed, while the others believe that the Chow Chow dogs are one amongst the founding breeds and even ancestors of Keeshond, Samoyed, etc.
Physical appearance:
They are strongly built dogs with height between 17 and 20 inches. They weigh 50 to 75 pounds. These dogs have broad head, almond-like eyes, short muzzles and tiny erect ears. The curl tail rests on their back. Some of these dogs have smooth coat, while the others have rough coat. Both the coats have dense inner coat. The rough coat is very unique. On the rough coat, there is profuse ruff around the dogs’ head and neck. The coat of these dogs is of various colors including black, red, cream, cinnamon and blue.
Grooming and Behavior:
Grooming these dogs is little difficult. Dogs of both the coat types shed and thus, they need to be brushed every second day. In case of severe shedding, it is necessary to shed daily.
This breed is a reserved breed. They require experienced owners. They are good with children who treat them kindly. They may not be good with other pets.
Exercise and Training:
They need morning and evening walk with little play time to remain fit. The puppies love to play twice a day. They should be socialized early as this helps them to feel free with humans.
Health and Lifespan:
Chow Chow dog is prone to health problems including hip and knee problems, eyelid infections, anesthesia, etc. These dogs have lifespan of 10 to 12 years.
