In mid-1500s, Basset Hound Dog was developed in France. With the motive to develop a hound that can be followed by men on foot, the friars of French Abbey of St. Hubert developed this breed.  These dogs have been used for years to track down rabbits, hare and even deer, and then hunt them. These dogs move slowly and enjoy games that can be followed on foot.

Physical appearance:
They are sturdy with large body and short legs. These dogs mostly weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. They can achieve height up to 14 inches. They are considered to have great stamina and power to work in fields on daily basis. They have large, cute head with appropriate muzzle size. They also have beautiful dark eyes and extra long ears. Basset Hounds have profound chest and long body. They have hound fashioned tail. These dogs have short and smooth, but loose coat. The coat can be of any hound color.

Grooming and Behavior:
The dog needs brushing with soft bristle at least two times in a week to shed weak and dead hair. Their long ears should also be cleaned two times weekly as they tend to get dirty soon. Basset Hound dogs are good to children and easily get other dogs and pets in the house. Thus, they are considered to be one amongst the most amicable dog breeds. However, it is to be noted that their young ones can be rowdy sometimes.

Exercise and Training:
They are full of energy for playing games and even for walks. Regular morning and evening walk and ball game during the day as part of their daily exercise regime can be more than enough. They are prone to obesity and thus, they tend to get lazier with the increase in their weight.
Training them is challenging. They can participate in canine sports like therapy dog work and tracking as well.

Health and Lifespan:
They may face health problems like obesity, eye disorders, hip dysplasia, etc. They have lifespan of around 11 to 13 years.
