American Water Spaniel Dog has been bred in American Midwest. This working gun dog is believed to have been a descendent of some Irish Water Spaniel dog and some Curly Coated Retriever. These dogs are capable of retrieving any kind of small game. This breed of dog is a prized working gun dog. Also, they are occasionally seen in dog shows.
Physical appearance:
American Water Spaniel dogs are of medium size with height between 15 and 18 inches. They weigh between 25 and 45 pounds. The dog is well built with balanced body. They have rounded eyes of yellow brown to brown or hazel or dark color. They have long dropped ears. These dogs have double coat with outer coat being normally wavy to curly and inner coat being weatherproof. The coat color is usually solid liver, brown or dark chocolate.
Grooming and Behavior:
The coat of this breed should be brushed at least thrice every week. These dogs should also be bathed at least once in a week. After every 6 weeks, they should be given professional grooming.
By nature, they are great companion dogs. They form special bond with a particular member of the family. They are good with children who treat them well. These dogs are also good with other pets except birds.
Exercise and Training:
They need daily dose of exercise with some playtime in between. They love to play and are the first ones to initiate it.
They need early socialization. They are easy to train and can learn the household rules easily. They are sometimes protective of their toys or food. They like to work and thus, training them can help make optimum utilization of their skills.
