Saint Bernard Dog Breed Pictures

Once a farm dog, Saint Bernard Dog gained popularity as rescue dog during the 16th century due to the dog’s use for rescue operations. This breed of dogs is considered as descendent of Mastiff dogs that accompanied the Roman Legion and Swiss dogs.

Physical appearance:
They are sturdy and have good strength. These dogs have height between 25.5 and 30 inches. They weigh between 120 and 180 pounds. With broad head and moderately short muzzle, they have dark brown eyes. The ears of this breed are moderately long and dropped down.

They have well-balanced body. The length of the tail is long. The inner coat of the dog is thick, while the outer coat is short and sometimes lengthy. They are wrapped in white outer coat having markings of red or brindle color.

Grooming and Behavior:
The coat of the dogs needs brushing two times in a week with the soft bristle brush to prevent it from matting. During shedding season, additional brushing is required.

These dogs salivate and thus, it is necessary for the owner to keep them clean through proper grooming. These dogs are gentle with children. However, the puppies can be bit rough and mischievous. The Saints are also good with other pets.

Exercise and Training:
These dogs are full of energy. Although they remain calm most of the time at home, they love going on long walks and playing rather than napping. They enjoy playing with ball and even with other dogs of their size. They need regular exercise, but it must be given under super vision in a fenced-in area.

It is advisable for the owner to give early training to this breed as the puppies grow very quickly. They must be trained about household rules. Also, they should be socialized to prevent them from taking advantage of their strength and overpower any family member or a guest.

Health and Lifespan:
Saint Bernard dog may suffer from diseases like hip dysplasia, allergies, epilepsy, etc. On an average, they have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years.
