Terrier Dog Breed Pictures

Also referred as Am Staff, the American Staffordshire Terrier dog is believed to have been sharing the traits of the ancestors of Standfordshire Bull Terrier, especially of the old English Bulldog and the white English Terrier. These dogs were used in the sports of bull and bear baiting.

Physical appearance:
These dogs are of medium size with height of 17 to 19 inches. They weigh 55 to 70 pounds. Their facial features include wedged head, strong and muscular jaws, rounded eyes and natural or cropped ears. They have sturdy body. Their chest is deep and broad. They have straight front legs and short tail. They have short and smooth coat of any color. 

Grooming and Behavior:
They can be groomed well by brushing their coat with soft bristle brush at least twice weekly.
By nature, they are great watchdogs. They are very kind and loving. They even tolerate the kids’ rough play. They are also patient and good with the other pets. However, they often get into trouble with other dogs of the same sex mainly because of their instinct of fighting inherited from the ancestors. Therefore, it is advisable to carefully supervise their interaction with other dogs.

Exercise and Training:
These dogs have high energy level and thus, they need regular exercise. Therefore, their exercise should include running for long duration, quick walks, pulling of weight, game of catching. As preventive measure, the exercises should be conducted within the fenced-in area to avoid potential problems.
Socializing these dogs can help them learn a lot, but early socializing often increases their temper. As a result of this, they may harm other dogs present with them for the socializing class.

Health and Lifespan:
American Staffordshire Terrier dog is prone to health problems like hip dysplasia, allergies, thyroid problems, etc. They usually have the lifespan of 11 to 13 years.
