Pekingese Dog Breed Pictures

Also referred as lion dogs or sun dogs, the Pekingese dog were considered sacred. They were bred and kept only by imperial families in China. This breed is considered as one of the old breeds. It is said to have been existing since 8th century during the Tang Dynasty in China. These dogs were brought to England by the Britishers after looting the Imperial Palace in the year 1860.

Physical appearance:
These dogs are usually 8 to 9 inches tall. These toy dogs hardly weigh 8 to 14 pounds. They have flat and wide head with dark rounded eyes. Their muzzle is short and broad. The ears are dropped. Their body is heavy in the front and light at the rear. The tail rests at their back. Their under coat is dense and soft to touch, while the outer coat is very thick and abundant. The coat color of these dogs can be of various colors.

Grooming and Behavior:
Their coat should be brushed at least two times in a week. These dogs sometimes shed a lot and thus, they may need too much care and grooming during this period. The coat may get tangled on not being brushed properly. Generally, the owners trim the coat short for cleanliness.
These companion dogs get along with children easily, but they don’t bear rough play at all. This breed may not be good with other dogs, but it is always good with cats.

Exercise and Training:
The dogs are very calm, but the puppies are active and love playing. A long walk can be more than enough for these dogs. They are watchful companions and not used to working. This is one of the reasons why it is difficult to train this breed. House training them can also be a tough task. Socializing these dogs is important.

Health and Lifespan:
They may suffer from anesthesia, breathing problem, disc disease, etc. The dogs can live up to 10 to 12 years.
