Also known as Old English Mastiff, the Mastiff dog is considered as native to English. These dogs are courageous and possess many great abilities. They have been used to protect the land from thieves and even to keep control over wolves.
Physical appearance:
These dogs are strong and giant. They have height of 27.5 to 30 inches. Their weight is always proportionate to their height. Their head is large and wide with medium sized eyes, dropped ears and large muzzles. They have long body with heavy bones. Their height is short in length than their body. The tail is long enough to reach the hocks. The inner coat is dense and the outer coat is short. These dogs have features like eyes, nose and muzzle of black color, while the coat is of fawn, brindle, or apricot color.
Grooming and Behavior:
They need brushing only once a week with soft bristle brush. They require owners who are capable of leading them. They are very courageous and affectionate. These dogs are good with children, if they are trained well. Their interaction with the other pets must be supervised. The puppies are usually playful and silly.
Exercise and Training:
These dogs don’t usually demand exercise, but they love to play for an hour or two every day. This breed may take advantage of their power to overpower any of the family member or even the owner. Thus, they need proper training. Training is important for this breed to keep self control.
They also need socialization as they were developed to be watchdogs and thus, they may become destructive without socialization.

Mastiff dog usually get prone to diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disorders, torsion, cancer, etc. These dogs have short lifespan of 8 to 10 years as compared to other dogs.
