Originally a fighting dog, Bulldog dog is a strong, aggressive and courageous breed of dogs. Earlier, they were used to fight with bulls and bears as well as other ferocious animals. In 18th century, the declaration of blood sports as illegal in England resulted in the extinction of bull breed including Bulldog. As a result of this, the breeders went on to develop a breed that has more of other traits instead of aggression.
Physical appearance:
English Bulldogs are sturdy and mid-sized dogs. They have heavy body, broad head and strong legs. They have height between 12 and 16 inches and weight between 40 and 50 pounds. These dogs have broad chest and their front legs are set wide apart. The face of the dog features rounded eyes, short muzzle, small nose and dropped ears. The tail of the bulldogs is usually straight or sometimes twisted. They have short and smooth coat of various colors. However, the most preferable color of the coat is red brindle.
Grooming and Behavior:
The coat of the dogs needs brushing at least 2 times in a week with the soft bristle brush. Also, cleansing and washing of the face of bulldogs are required to prevent it from skin problems.
These dogs love comfort. They have gentle and good temperament. It is difficult to live with bulldogs as they snore, snort, grumble and even drool. They are good with children and even with other pets. However, the male bulldogs may fight with other male dogs.
Exercise and Training:
They need regular exercise to remain fit. Morning and evening walk along with some playtime in between is more than enough for these dogs. These dogs usually have obesity problem and thus, daily exercise is necessary for them.
These dogs have great power and early training helps them to make right use of their power by avoiding getting into trouble. Puppies are mischievous. They usually suffer from breathing problem during hot and humid climate. So, hard training should be avoided during such time.
