Whippet Dog Breed Pictures

This breed of dog originated in England. Whippet dogs are considered as working man’s Greyhound mainly because they are small in size and easy to feed. In addition to this, they are good hunters and can provide food for table. Besides work, Whippets are also great entertainer and playful. They are excellent sighthound and can run 35 miles per hour.

Physical appearance:
These dogs are strongly built and have great speed. They are usually small as compared to the Greyhound. They normally have 18 to 22 inches of height. These dogs weigh about 20 to 30 pounds. They have long head. They look cute with dark eyes and rose-like small ears. This breed of dog is sometimes slightly longer than it is tall. These dogs have strong back, profound chest and long tail. They have short coat of various colors which may include solid colors, different color patches, etc.

Grooming and Behavior:
These dogs need brushing only once in a week. Socializing this breed is a great idea because an un-socialized Whippet may tend to be very shy and even become fearful. They heartily love their owners and other people close to them. They are normally good with kids and even other pets. It is to be noted that they may chase a running cat leading to worst conditions. Thus, the owner should take special care of their small pets. They may become sick on being left outside during the cold weather.

Exercise and Training:
Although these are calm by nature, they love playing and running. They have great speed. Therefore, it is advisable to allow them to run in a fenced-in area once every week. They need regular exercise and irregularity or lack of exercise can be destructive. They love canine sports such as flyball, therapy dog work, etc. These dogs need gentle training mainly because they tend to become sensitive.

Health and Lifespan:
They usually suffer from eye disorders. On an average, they can live up to 15 years.
